DeKalb County Board of Health Celebrates 10 Years of Oral Health Quiz Bowl

With sunny smiles on a sunny day, five students competed in the DeKalb County Board of Health’s 2016 annual Oral Health Quiz Bowl’s final round.  Jahin Zashim, a Hightower Elementary School fifth grader, was the winner.

As she congratulated the finalists, former Weather Channel Meteorologist Vivian Brown compared the beaming children to the sun.  Michael Thurmond, former DeKalb County School District superintendent, commended the students on their vast knowledge of oral health.

The quiz bowl’s first round began in January with over 1,000 fifth graders at ten DeKalb County schools.  Registrants received thick packets of information they had to learn.  The second round greatly narrowed the field and then the finalists recently competed in the third round.

The first runner-up was Zaniyah Kimber of Avondale Elementary and the second runner-up was Breanna Donaire from Dresden Elementary.  Fourth place went to ImyaEvans of Avondale and fifth place to Brandy Alvarenga from Hightower.  All finalists received spin toothbrushes and other dental products.
