Refugee Health

Program Purpose

The major purpose of the Refugee Health Program is to provide domestic health screening to newly arrived refugees of DeKalb County, to eliminate health-related barriers that could impact the refugees’ successful resettlement while at the same time, protecting the health of the general public. By identifying and treating health conditions that may adversely impact effective resettlement, the health screening enables refugees to become self –sufficient and productive members of the society.

What we do

  • Health Screening, immunizations, and referrals as needed
  • Tuberculosis assessment, including the use of QuantiFERON – TB Gold In-Tube
  • Digital x-ray services
  • Latent tuberculosis management
  • Management of pathogenic ova and parasite
  • Mental Health and torture screening and referral
  • Pediatric Primary Care Services
  • Provide Interpretation and translation services during clinic visits
  • Outreach and Home Visit
  • Pediatric Primary Care Services
  • I-693 supplemental for adjustment of status

Who is Eligible?

Refugees, Asylees, Cuban/Haitian Entrants, and Victims of Human Trafficking is eligible for the program services.

Who is a Refugee?
A refugee, as defined by the Refugee Act of 1980, is a person who is outside of and unable or unwilling to avail himself/herself of the protection of the home country because of persecution or fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

Refugee Pediatric Clinic:
The DeKalb County Board of Health, in Partnership with the Southeast Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Permanente recently established a pediatric primary care clinic, as an extension of the Refugee Health Program.  Currently, clinic is  held on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Richardson Health Center and is available for children up to age 18.  The clinic provides a full range of primary care services including x-rays, labs, and referrals to specialists.
