The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) measures behaviors that put young adults at risk for disease, injury and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the YRBS in collaboration with federal, state and private sector partners including state and local departments of education. The YRBS measures behaviors in six areas: (1) unintentional and intentional injuries, (2) tobacco use, (3) alcohol and other drug use, (4) sexual behaviors that contribute to HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy, (5) eating habits and (6) physical activity.

In 2003, the DeKalb County School System contracted with the DeKalb County Board of Health to conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey among students in DeKalb County public high schools (grades 9-12).  This survey was repeated in the fall of 2005, the spring of 2007 and 2009.  The only middle school survey (grades 6-8) was conducted in the spring of 2006.
