DEKALB COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH
INVESTIGATES POSSIBLE TB EXPOSURE
AT TUCKER HIGH SCHOOL

The DeKalb County Board of Health is investigating a possible tuberculosis (TB) exposure at Tucker High School.

On Monday, October 14, the Board of Health will administer TB skin tests to students and staff of the school who may be at risk of TB exposure. This investigation is necessary because the Board of Health received a report of a person diagnosed as having a potentially contagious case of tuberculosis. Any individuals who test positive will be evaluated further.

Dr. Stuart Brown, medical director for the DeKalb County Board of Health, explained, "The most important thing for concerned Tucker High School students and parents to be aware of is that there is only a limited risk of exposure. Concerned parents can have their teens receive a skin test either at the school or from their primary care provider."

Tuberculosis is caused by the bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria are inhaled in air-borne droplets produced when a person with active TB coughs, sneezes or speaks. To become infected with TB, one must have direct extended contact with a contagious person who has the disease. The TB skin test is the most accurate way to determine if a person has been infected.

The DeKalb County Board of Health offers TB testing at all of its health centers. Call 404-294-3700 for information about TB services and the nearest health center.
